ReEnergise project work for rural estates
Case Studies – examples of ReEnergise project work for rural estates
Here is a selection from our work for rural estates. Many rural estates are still using oil for heating, and switching to a low-carbon alternative will almost invariably be a way to save money.

Firle Estates
Firle Estates, East Sussex
Work done:
- Feasibility study for a 1MW biomass community-energy district heating system to provide low-carbon heat to Firle village in East Sussex, including an upgraded biomass energy centre serving over 80 homes via a 1.5km heat main.
Benefits to client:
- Findings illustrated how the estate could market the heat generated to benefit those living in the village with cheaper, low-carbon heat, but also provide a good annual dividend to the estate.
- A sensitivity analysis was conducted to understand how much income would be generated at various fuel prices and inflation scenarios, as well as carbon emissions avoided.
- Business case demonstrated strong and consistent average returns over 20 years.

Nower Wood Education Centre
Nower Wood Education Centre Surrey Wildlife Trust, Surrey
Work done:
- Consultancy and project management of low-carbon energy solutions for a new-build education centre on the North Downs.
- Cost/benefit analysis, design, specification, tender and project management for a solar thermal array.
- Cost/benefit analysis, design, specification and installation of a biomass 30kW wood-pellet boiler.
Benefits to client:
- A sustainable building in which to educate young children about nature and the importance of looking after it.
- Cost-neutral compared to the conventional high-carbon options of mains power and oil/LPG.

Solar PV at Crouch Farm, Barlavington Estate
Barlavington Estate, West Sussex
Work done:
- Installation of a 115kW solar PV system to provide power to a rural milking parlour.
- Currently conducting a further low-carbon energy feasibility study for a light industrial centre on estate land.
Benefits to client:
- Forecast payback of 4.5 years and total net benefit of over £460,000 over 20 years.

Biomass district heating system plant room, Beaulieu
Beaulieu Estate, Hampshire
Work done:
- Undertook a review of energy systems and consumption across principal museum buildings, focussing on reducing energy consumption and costs.
- Provided a comprehensive independent overview of all low-carbon technologies available for heat and power.
- A discussion with the client concluded that in addition to upgrading lighting to LED and improving building insulation, a 200kW biomass boiler was the most suitable technology for the estate heating needs.
- Ran a tender for the biomass boiler and subsequently project managed installation through to commissioning.
Benefits to client:
- Forecast payback of 4.5 years and total net benefit of over £460,000 over 20 years.
- Forecast average annual ROI of 25% over 20 years.
