We want to provide a brief update on current energy market conditions, as a number of clients have upcoming contract renewals and are considering their procurement strategy for the months ahead.
Over recent weeks, wholesale energy markets have remained under pressure due to a combination of geopolitical uncertainty, ongoing disruption to global LNG supply routes, and lower-than-normal European gas storage levels ahead of the winter period. Current data indicates that North-West European gas storage remains significantly below historical levels for this time of year, reducing the buffer available should winter demand increase or further supply disruptions occur.
At the same time, improved manufacturing activity across Europe is expected to increase energy demand, placing additional pressure on wholesale markets. Combined with continuing uncertainty surrounding international energy supplies, this has contributed to an increase in both gas and electricity forward contract prices.
A common question we receive is whether it is worth waiting in the hope that prices will fall.
Whilst markets can move in either direction and nobody can predict future pricing with certainty, current market fundamentals do not suggest an obvious catalyst for a significant short-term reduction in energy prices. In fact, many of the underlying indicators currently point towards continued volatility and a risk of further upward movement as we move closer to winter.
Waiting therefore becomes a strategic decision rather than a guaranteed saving opportunity.
Rather than trying to predict the lowest point in the market, we generally encourage clients to:
For many organisations, the objective is not necessarily to achieve the absolute lowest market price, but to secure a competitive and manageable energy cost while reducing exposure to future market volatility.
If your energy contracts are due for renewal within the next 12 months, we would be pleased to provide an updated market review, discuss procurement options, and help you determine the most appropriate strategy for your organisation.
Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss your position in more detail.
